Stafford Beer - events after the 23.08.2002
A first version
of this memorial website
"Stafford Beer, who died on Friday aged 75, was a leading exponent of cybernetics,
the theory devised in the 1940s by Norbert Wiener
which applied lessons from biology to the management of organisations,
and which Beer applied to the management of business."
A note from Paul Hollingworth
"...A charismatic, even flamboyant, character, Beer founded two major pioneering OR groups;
wrote some of the best books about it; and was a world leader in the development of systems ideas.
He is widely acknowledged as the founder of management cybernetics,
which he defined as "the science of effective organisation."

Stafford Beer Memorial Session at CybCon 2002
Some of you will be coming to the Cybernetics Society Conference at London
School of Economics on Saturday September 14th.
There will be special events in due course but would you like a memorial session
for Stafford at 4 o'clock?
No doubt we will be reflecting on Stafford's work throughout the day..
Please advise if you would like to contribute to the memorial/ Requiem(?)
session. I will make appropriate arrangements as a form emerges.
There are more details of the existing arrangements at
Nick Green (Council of the Cybernetics Society
and Real Time Study Group)
At the Royal Society of Arts(RSA-UK)
"Wanted you to know that we have confirmed the RSA for a Memorial Celebration for
Stafford Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. on October 11th.
The ones in Toronto went very nicely, both the slightly more formal one in a college common room
and a pub gathering. How was the Meeting and the Memorial at the Cybernetics Society?
The plan for the 11th is to have a little music, a little poetry and a chance for people
to share something they might want to say. Chris will be getting the announcement out to the whole list
in a couple of days as soon as they get back from a trip. We want to spread the word as much
as possible so if there are e-mail lists, etc. please pass it on."
From Allenna Leonard (Stafford Beer's partner of the last 21 years and President of the American Society for Cybernetics) to Nick Green
An article on the OpenDemocracy website
"Stafford Beer achieved the hardest of all pedagogic tasks: he changed the way people think.
His protean influence stretches from generations of inspired students, through Salvador Allende’s Chile,
to the collective brain of openDemocracy. A huge, life-affirming figure has passed,
but his work will long survive, says our international editor."
